Angola

Angola soccer information

Football is the most popular sport in Angola and there are enough up-and-coming young players to ensure that this will not change in the foreseeable future. This is without doubt one of the reasons for their impressive results.

The 'A' national team has twice won the African COSAFA Cup (in 1999 and 2001) and twice reached the final competition of the African Cup of Nations (in 1996 and 1998). The culmination of this steady upward trend is now their first ever qualification for the FIFA World Cup™ in Germany. But the Angolan youth system has also enjoyed success, with the U-20 national team returning from Egypt in 2001 as African U-20 champions. Furthermore, the fact that the Angolan womens team also reached the final competition of the African Cup of Nations once again underlines the associations versatility and success. It is worth mentioning that, with the exception of one team, all Angolan national teams are coached by Angolans.
